Challenges

Heavy commercial vehicles and buses currently account for only four percent of the global vehicle fleet. However, due to the enormous volumes of goods they transport, they are responsible for around 40 percent of global CO2 emissions in the transport sector. At the same time, the transport industry is facing ambitious emission reduction targets. In Europe, commercial vehicles must reduce CO2 emissions by 45 percent by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. To achieve this goal, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) states that the share of emission-free vehicles in the fleet must increase significantly—to 400,000 units by 2030. Given the need to expand charging and refueling infrastructure, the shortage of renewable energy sources, and the limited range of vehicles, this is a major challenge.

Munich Electrification is at the side of its customers as a partner for a successful transformation. The battery management systems designed by ME play a crucial role in optimizing the performance and longevity of EV batteries. These advanced systems ensure efficient charging, discharging, and monitoring of battery safety and health, maximizing the overall efficiency and range of electric vehicles. These innovative battery solutions have always been the core business of Munich Electrification.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

Barcelona BMS

The Barcelona BMS is an integrated battery management control unit that combines an accurate current sensor with a high-performance battery management control unit. This control unit includes all the features expected from a modern automotive BMS, along with some unique additional functionalities. It transforms the battery into a smart sensor device that provides sensor data to the vehicle control unit and includes battery management safety functions up to ASIL D. Designed for automotive, commercial vehicle (CV), and utility task vehicle (UTV) applications, the Barcelona BMS offers customer-configurable software parameters and supports 500 A of continuous current.

This highly integrated BMS solution is cost-optimized for high-volume automotive series applications. The Barcelona Platform integrates all features required for a safe and robust battery design, from sensors to actuators. With its versatile software, the SBS can be vehicle and battery agnostic, eliminating the need for variant handling by ME. Additionally, it supports secure boot and UDS flash via CAN or CAN-FD.

Bologna BMU

The Bologna Battery Management Unit offers advanced functionality with main and peripheral coordination logic at the pack level, enabling the configuration of up to eight contactors and eight high-voltage measurement inputs. This flexibility ensures adaptability to various system requirements. Additionally, our custom CMB technology, which operates without oil immersion, can be utilized up to 950 volts and is ideal for fully electric trucks. Our highly innovative cell measurement technology ensures optimum safety and accuracy with a wide range of available products for a different amount of voltage measurement channels.

Comprehensive Software Expertise

From embedded software development to model-based functions and advanced high-level algorithms for various cell chemistries, our software stack is fully compliant with the latest safety and added security requirements for modern automotive applications. We adhere to the most modern software development principles while meeting automotive safety engineering processes. Our development process, from requirements definition to software implementation, testing, and documentation, is fully automated, allowing us to implement changes rapidly and meet customer specifications with the highest quality standards.
